Morocco-based phosphate producer OCP Group warned that disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz have evolved from a raw-material shortage into a broader global fertilizer supply shock. While OCP reported first-quarter 2026 revenue of about MAD 20 billion (USD 2.1 billion), the company said soaring sulfur prices and constrained trade routes are tightening fertilizer availability worldwide. OCP has managed to protect margins by securing sulfur inventories ahead of the price spike and shifting production toward triple superphosphate (TSP), which requires less sulfur than other phosphate fertilizers.![]()
Company executives said the crisis is now affecting both fertilizer production and distribution, as roughly half of global seaborne sulfur trade and nearly a quarter of traded ammonia volumes normally pass through the Strait of Hormuz. Production cuts among Gulf fertilizer producers and ongoing Chinese phosphate export restrictions have further tightened global supplies, limiting OCP’s ability to increase output despite continued exports from its Atlantic-facing facilities. The company expects fertilizer markets to remain constrained through the rest of 2026, raising concerns about higher farm input costs, reduced fertilizer application rates, and potential impacts on global food production and food prices.
