The Soil and Water Outcomes Fund (SWOF) incentivizes farmers to adopt conservation practices that enhance environmental quality. By implementing methods such as reduced tillage, cover cropping, and extended crop rotations, farmers can improve soil health, sequester carbon, and enhance water quality. Since its inception in 2020, SWOF has enrolled over 540,000 acres across 16 states, resulting in the sequestration of 462,000 metric tons of greenhouse gases and preventing millions of pounds of nitrogen and phosphorus from leaving fields. Farmers receive average payments of $33 per acre, with over $17 million disbursed to date. SWOF collaborates with public and private partners, including the Iowa Soybean Association, to create new revenue streams for farmers while achieving sustainability goals. Enrollment involves a straightforward process where farmers provide field data, receive payment offers, and implement agreed-upon practices with ongoing support. By stacking multiple environmental benefits into a single transaction, SWOF offers substantial financial incentives beyond traditional programs, promoting both environmental stewardship and economic sustainability in agriculture.
